Diogenes Laertius reports the opinion that the first of the skeptics was Homer; he thus says, in his doxographer's words, that skepticism follows philosophy "as the shadow follows the body." Now the only complete exposition of this reverse side of Greek rationalism to have come down to us is that of Sextus Empiricus, and the Pyrrhonian Sketches, a small compendium of skeptical philosophy
